Memory Verse: "This is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us." Isaiah 25:9, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - STARRY HEAVENS Materials needed: Blue construction paper (one piece for each child) Silver or gold star stickers Pencil Book about star constellations WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) On each child's blue construction paper make 4-5 of the more well-known star constellations. Use a pencil and make dots where the stars belong. Be sure and include Orion. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have each child place a star sticker overtop the pencil dots in each constellation. Talk about their names and how many, many stars there are. In our story today a wonderful thing is going to happen in the sky right around this star group. (Show Orion) Set the papers aside. They will be used after the story is told in the next activity. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY ILLUSTRATION Materials needed: Papers from previous activity Markers OR crayons Angel stickers (if available) Glitter Glue sticks WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Draw the circle rainbow on each child's blue construction paper around Orion similar to the picture on p. 42 of the quarterly. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: After hearing the story, show the children the picture in the quarterly. Give them markers or crayons, angel stickers and glitter to complete their blue heavenly sky with a second coming illustration. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE REVIEW Materials needed: 1 piece of white, blue and black construction paper Scissors Large second coming picture mounted on something you can punch a small hole in the top of Yarn (approximately 10 feet) Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Mount the second coming picture on something like cardboard or poster board and punch a small pencil size hole in the top. Thread the picture onto the yarn. Tape one end of the yarn to the wall. Cut out one large cloud figure from the white, blue and black construction paper. Place the clouds in a circle. (The children will be rotating around to each one, but they stay in close proximity to one another.) WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Divide the children into three groups. Stand group one on or around the white cloud, group two on or around the blue cloud and group three on or around the black cloud. Place the second coming picture all the way up to the wall. Give the other yarn end to a teacher to hold right over the children's heads. Group one is to repeat the words, "This is our God" Group two repeats the words, "we trusted in him" and group three repeats the words, "and he saved us." Isa. 25:9. Slide the second coming picture about 2 feet up the yarn closer to the children. Have the children rotate to the left so they're standing on or around the cloud to their left. Group one repeats the same words repeated last time, group two repeats the same words and so does group three. Move the second coming picture 2 feet closer. Continue rotating the groups and moving the picture until the picture is right within their midst. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - PASSING THE GOOD NEWS ON Materials needed: Large star (about the size of a CD case; can be made out of any material that can be passed) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children sit in a circle. Begin passing the star around. You, the teacher, close your eyes. When you say, "stop" and open your eyes, whoever is holding the star says, "I want to tell_________________ that Jesus is coming soon. (They fill in the blank with someone they know in their family or circle of friends and acquaintances that they would be willing to share the news about Jesus' coming.) This activity continues until they run out of ideas or you run out of time. Encourage them to really share this good news this week.
