******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Program Helps for December 22, 2001 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeers) Date Completed: December 1, 2001 Abstract: Activities to be used with the story, BATTLE WITH A GIANT ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: God will do great things for us if we trust Him. Memory Verse: "I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty." 1 Sam. 17:45, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - CREATING A GIANT Materials needed: Roll of white paper (10 feet) Markers Crayons Scissors Thread Tape Measuring Stick or tape Hole punch WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Roll the white paper out onto the floor. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children gather around on one side of the paper. Tell them they are going to help you make a giant. (Make the giant 9 « feet tall if possible.) Have a child help you measure and mark the giant's height on the paper. Quickly draw a large outline of a man. Put children on both sides of the paper and assign them portions to color. They can add details of his armor as they are able. Cut the man out, punch a hole in the top of his head and hang him by a thread from the ceiling (if possible) at the front of the room or wherever the Bible story will be told. In our Bible story today David the shepherd boy fights against a giant this big. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BATTLING THE GIANT WITH GOD'S WORD Materials needed: Blindfold Paper Giant from Getting Their Attention Activity Yardstick Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary unless you didn't make the giant in the last activity. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Repeat it several times together. Blindfold a child. Give them the yardstick and place them approximately 3-4 feet from the hanging giant. Turn them around three times. (This is similar to a pinata activity) The blindfolded child repeats the memory verse and then gets three swings at the giant. (If the giant does get knocked down, just hang it back up for the next child's turn.) Give each child a turn to knock the giant down. Review with the children why David was successful in killing Goliath. It was not because of his skill but because he went against the giant in the name of Jesus and with the power of His word. That is the only way we can fight and win against Satan and evil. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE BATTLE MATCH-UP Materials needed: (20) 3 X 5 cards Pen WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Draw two matching cards of each of the following objects from the Bible story. There are ten objects, so there will be twenty cards altogether: helmet, sword, spear, shield, pouch, staff, sling, 5 rocks, small David figure, large Goliath figure Shuffle the cards well and spread them out on a flat surface. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children take turns flipping two cards over looking for matches. When they find a match they tell how the object was used or talked about in today's story. When the matches are all found point out to the children that some of the matches are weapons of Goliath and some are weapons of David. What was David's most powerful weapon? The name of Jesus on His lips and in his heart. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - WEAPONS FOR WARFARE Materials needed: A brown or gold felt square for each child Scissors or material puncher 5 gem stones for each child 1 piece of 12" yarn for each child WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut out a large dessert plate size circle from each square of felt. Punch holes around the peripheral about 1" apart. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a felt circle, piece of yarn and five gem stones. Have them make a pouch by weaving the yarn in and out of the holes that are around the circle. (This gives a drawstring effect.) Talk about how we defeat Satan. Have each child drop a gemstone into their pouch as each of the following ideas are talked about. We defeat Satan with: prayer, (we learn to pray anytime, anywhere about everything) Jesus' name(we speak it and tell Satan to leave us alone in Jesus' name), Bible (we know what the Bible says and we use Bible words to chase Satan away), faith-talk (we talk about Jesus and His power instead of Satan) For the fifth gem, have the children repeat the memory verse before dropping it into the pouch. Encourage them to keep their pouch and gems and share what they have learned with their family and friends as soon as they get home and throughout the week.
