******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Program Helps for December 15, 2001 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: December 1, 2001 Abstract: Activities to be used with the story A SHEPHERD BOY BECOMES A KING ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: God helps us choose right from wrong. Memory Verse: "Listen to my instruction and be wise." Prov. 8:33, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - HEART LISTENING Materials needed: Stethoscope WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Say, "Did you know that you listen with two parts of your body? Your ears and your heart. With your ears you can listen to what different parts of your body are doing." Give children turns listening to each others lungs breathing, stomach noises and hearts beating. Say, "With your heart you choose whether to do something about what your ears heard. Let me show you what I mean. If you tell me you are lonely today, I hear you say those words with your ears. If my heart is listening as well as my ears, I will say or do something to help you not feel lonely. If my heart is not listening I will hear you say your lonely, but I will not do anything about it. Here is another example. If your mother asks you to do something, you hear her with your ears. If your heart is listening too, you will decide to do what she asks you. If your heart is not listening, you will ignore her even though your ears heard her. In our Bible story today King Saul listening and heard God's instructions with his ears, but his heart did not hear because he chose not to obey God's instructions." GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE HIDDEN PICTURE STORY Materials needed: Picture on p. 46 of Kindergarten quarterly of David and the sheep Black pen Crayons WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: On p. 46 in the Kindergarten quarterly hand-draw in the following objects hiding them in various places in the picture, then xerox a copy of the picture for each child. --The number 7 (stands for the number of days Saul was to wait for Samuel) --A cow (one of the animals Saul did not destroy after the battle) --A Bible times anointing horn (used to anoint David king) --The number 8 (stands for the number of sons Jesse had) --A harp (stands for David singing as a shepherd boy) --A shepherd's staff (stands for David's occupation as a shepherd before he became king) WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a hidden Bible picture story and some crayons. As you narrate the story they are to look for the objects mentioned as you talk about them and color them. At the end of the story they may finish coloring the rest of the picture. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE REPEAT Materials needed: Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children sit in their chairs in a circle. Tell the children that you are going to test their listening ability. The memory verse has only 7 words in it. You will whisper it into the ear of the child to your right. You may whisper it several times until they think they have heard it correctly. They will then whisper it in the ear of the child to their right. This continues around the circle until it gets back to you. If it does not come back to you correctly, reverse the order and repeat the procedure this time going to the left. Show the children where the verse is found in the Bible. Talk again about how listening is more than just hearing. It is being wise and following instructions. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - CONNECTING THE EARS AND THE HEART Materials needed: Heart stickers Drawing of a large ear WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Make a xeroxed copy of the drawing of the ear for each child. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Say, "When you listen with just your ears, you don't have to do anything. But when you listen with your ears and your heart you decide whether or not to do something about what you heard." Give each child an ear drawing and five heart stickers. They will listen to you read the following sentences. If they think the child is listening with his ears AND heart they are to put a heart sticker somewhere on their ear drawing. 1.
