******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, December 8, 2001 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: November 1, 2001 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, WANTING TO BE LIKE OTHERS ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: To teach the child to choose what is right, no matter what others are doing. Memory Verse: "In all your ways acknowledge him." Prov. 3:6, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - SPOTTING THE SAME Materials needed: White paper Black and white picture of a child (clip art is best) Scissors Pen Crayons WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Xerox the picture of the child so there are approximately 15 of them. On about 6 of the children alter the picture in some way so that it is different from the original picture. (For example put a different design on the clothes or change the hairstyle or put a different type of shoe on one foot.) Cut the children out and glue them randomly onto the white paper with the original child glued in the left hand upper corner. Xerox a copy of this sheet for each child. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a sheet of children. Call their attention to the child in the upper left-hand corner. Ask them to find all the rest of the children that look just like that one and color them. If they are different in any way they are to leave them uncolored. In our Bible story today, the Israelites wanted to be exactly like the other nations around them. They wanted to look the same, talk the same, and act the same. This made God sad because He wanted them to be different. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY MATCH-UP Materials needed: (48) 3 X 5 cards Glue stick Plain white paper Scissors WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Prepare the 48 game cards as follows: On the piece of plain white paper draw or find a picture of a donkey, a crown, a question mark, a dollar bill, a table with cups and plates, a little jar or bottle. Xerox the sheet of paper so you have eight of each picture or drawing. Cut out the 48 pictures and glue them on 3 X 5 cards, one picture to each card. (Hint: Don't cut the pictures out perfectly, just make squares or circles around them) Mix the cards up well and spread them in rows out on the floor. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children gather around the cards on the floor. After telling them the story, have them play a card matching game. Whenever they find a match, talk together about how the item was mentioned in the story. (For example: When matches of donkeys are found, talk about how Saul's father lost the donkeys, how Saul and his servant went looking for the donkeys, how they agreed to ask Samuel for help in finding them and how they were at home when they arrived there later.) Match all the cards until they are used up. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE SONG Materials needed: Piano player or cassette recorder Music to the tune of London Bridge is Falling Down WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Pre-record the music if necessary and practice singing the memory verse to the tune of London Bridge is Falling Down. In all your ways acknowledge Him acknowledge Him acknowledge Him In all your ways acknowledge Him Proverbs 3:6 WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Help the children play London Bridge is Falling Down using the memory verse words in place of the regular ones. Explain to the children that having to follow other people all the time is bound to get you "trapped". You can't always have what other people have or be like others. The best way to make choices is to decide what you think Jesus would do. Ask other people you know who love Jesus, pray about it, then decide. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - SIMON SAYS Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Ask the children if they have ever played Simon says. It is a game where everyone does the same thing that the leader asks them to do if the leader says, Simon says first. Have the children line up in a horizontal row. Give them the following directions: Simon says, "jump on one foot". Simon says, "stop" Simon says, "clap your hands". Simon says, "stop" Twirl around. (Point out to the children who twirled what their mistake was in not listening to Simon.) Continue playing the game in this fashion, giving different orders. Then say, "You know boys and girls there is a good time to follow what other people are doing. Like when your friends are filing back into a classroom after recess or when they are cheering for a handicapped person whose trying to win a game. There are other times when it is not good to follow what other people are doing. Like when your friends are being naughty to a teacher or when they're playing a mean trick on someone else. Those are the times not to be like Simon says. What does Jesus say, what would He do? That's what you should do too!"
