******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, December 2, 2,000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: November 15, 2,000 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, PAUL'S COURAGE IN A STORM ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: God listens to and answers our prayers for others and our prayers about our fears. Memory Verse: "I will be with him in trouble." Psa. 91:15, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - BUILD A BOAT Materials needed: Coconut Hard Stella Dora bread sticks (1 or 2) (1) sheet of white construction paper & (1) sheet of 3 or 4 other colors Hot glue gun/glue sticks Large dish pan Water Scissors WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Soften up the coconut meat so it can be dug out of the shell (apply heat). Draw a sail on the white construction paper. Cut the sheets of colored construction paper into 2" X 2" squares. Cut 3-4 squares of each color. Fill the large dish pan with water. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Explain to the children that they are going to help build a boat to sail in. Let them help you dig out the coconut meat. (Leave enough so you have a hollowed out shell, but the shell must remain firm not flimsy.) Cut holes in the white sails to insert the bread sticks through. Have the children put the bread sticks through the insertions. Make a puddle of hot glue in the bottom of the coconut and have a child stick the bread sticks into the puddles of glue and hole them there briefly. Have each child choose a colored construction paper square. They draw themselves on the square. Then place the squares into the coconut boat and place the boat into the large dish pan of water. Tell them to keep their eye on the boat. Let's see if it can stay afloat while we listen to a story about another boat trip. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BOATLOAD REVIEW Materials needed: 3 X 5 cards Clothes pins Clothesline rope (At least 12 feet) 2 poster boards A picture of the Titanic A picture of a bible times ship WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) On the 3 X 5 cards print the following sentences, one sentence to a card: 1. On this boat you can eat lots of delicious fancy food. 2. There were only a few people on this boat. 3. You pay lots of money to ride this boat. 4. This boat had prisoners on it. 5. You can play in a game room and go to fancy parties on this boat. 6. On this boat you can hardly tell you are moving. 7. Paul sailed on this boat. 8. Many people died when this boat crashed. 9. No people died when this boat crashed. 10. The people who lived from this boat crash lived on an island for three months. 11. A poisonous snake bit one of these passengers. Tie the ends of the clothesline rope together so you have a circle. Glue the picture of the Titanic at the top of one of the poster boards. Write the name Titanic under it. Glue the picture of the bible time ship at the top of the other poster board. Write the title, Julius's ship under it. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Tell the children the story before doing this activity. This is a review activity. Place the poster boards at one end of the room. Put them on low easels or tape them to a wall where the children can reach them. Have all the children stand down by the poster boards. Choose one child to help you by holding the rope down at the poster boards. You hold the other end of the rope away from the children so that you have created a pulley effect. (The cards will be passed from you to the children at the poster boards using the rope as a pulley) Read the first card. Ask the children if the card is talking about the ship that Paul rode in or about a fancy expensive cruise ship like the Titanic. (Briefly explain that the Titanic was also a real ship that sailed before they were born) Using a clothespin, pin the card to the rope and have the child at the other end start pulling it to himself. When it reaches him he unclasps it and clasps it to the side of the poster board that the class has decided is the correct answer. Continue in this manner until all questions are answered and all cards are clipped to one or the other of the poster boards. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE BOAT RIDE Materials needed: Cardboard box with handles (large enough to pull a Kindergarten child in, but small enough to pull) Rope Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Repeat it together several times. Put the rope through one handle of the box so you can pull the box. Have a Kindergarten child get in the "boat". Start at one end of the room. Tell the children they are going on Paul's journey. The journey ends at the other end of the room. They must repeat the memory verse as quickly as possible while they're traveling, so they don't crash when they get to the other side. (If they cannot repeat the verse by the end of the journey, tell them they crashed. Give them opportunity to listen to others and try again.) Begin by pulling them fairly slowly across the room. As they become better able to say the verse pull them faster and complete the journey more rapidly. ALTERNATE MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY - Materials needed: Large sheets of white butcher block paper Scissors Markers Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Draw a large 6' snake for each child on the butcher block paper. Put rings around it every foot so it is divided into 8 sections. In each section beginning at the head write a memory verse word in pencil. Cut the snakes out. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Repeat it several times together. Give each child a snake. Have them lay down on the floor and trace the words with markers. Talk about how Jesus is always with us, especially in times of trouble. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - PRAYER PILLOW Materials needed: 2 felt squares for each child (Light colored) Fiber fill stuffing Fabric paints or fabric markers Hot glue gun/glue sticks Following prayer poem WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Paint the following prayer poem using the fabric paints or fabric crayons on 1 felt square for each child. Dear Jesus help me when I pray To pray for people who hurt me or who are unkind I know you love them too Hot glue or sew another matching felt square to the painted one leaving one end open for stuffing. Do this for each child. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Read the poem to the children. Have them stuff fiber fill into their pillow. Hot glue the end shut. Encourage the children to put the pillow on their bed, so they can remember to pray the poem along with their prayers.
