******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, October 14, 2000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date: September 15, 2000 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, PAUL A MISSIONARY ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: God needs missionaries who will go anywhere for Him. Memory Verse: "My peace I give you...Do not be afraid." John 14:27, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION -GOIN' ON A TRIP Materials needed: World map (must be a flat map, not a globe; if you cannot get a world map, United States is sufficient) Small colored sticky dots Blindfold WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Pin or tape the map on a wall or board at eye level for Kindergarten children. Locate reference information that tells the approximate distance in hours or days traveled each country is from the United States. (If you're using the States map, how far in hours or days each state is from where you live.) WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Tell the children you want them to imagine they can take a trip today. Blindfold each child in turn and have them walk forward and place a colored sticky dot somewhere on the map. Then uncover their eyes and talk about where they landed. About how long would it take to get there? Have they ever been to a far away place? Would they want to go alone? Do they feel better when they are with their family or friends? In our Bible story today Paul begins some trips. They are special trips because he is going to places that God sends him. He's going to be a missionary. Let's see where he is headed for first. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BOAT RIDE BIBLE STORY Materials needed: One strong box that slides easily across the floor and will hold a Kindergarten child Rope (4-5 feet long) Scissors 5-6 pieces of colored construction paper Short broom handle, OR dowel stick Pillowcase Markers WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut a hole in the front of the box just large enough to thread the rope through. Tie a knot so it cannot come back through. Tape the colored construction paper at different spots in the room to designate stopping points. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children decorate Paul's missionary boat (the box). Hang the pillowcase from the stick and each child who "rides" in the boat holds the sail up. Take turns pulling the children in the "boat" from stop to stop. (Colored construction paper) At each stop tell them some more of the Bible story. 1. Many of Jesus' followers were being hurt because they loved Jesus. So they moved away to other countries. Missionaries, or people who love to tell about Jesus, went to these far countries to tell more people about Jesus. 2. One of the cities where new Christians were was called Antioch. Missionary Barnabas went to help the new Christians there. The church grew bigger and bigger. Barnabas had to call Paul to come help him. 3. Paul and Barnabas were very happy working and preaching in Antioch. The people they told about Jesus told other people. Many people threw away their idols. 4. After a year Paul and Barnabas left on a missionary journey. This journey was hard. They were often hungry and thirsty. Sometimes they were so cold they thought they would never be warm again! They had to walk many, many miles through lonely countryside. 5. Where can you be a missionary? Do you have to go far away? Can you each think of some things you can do to be a missionary? GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE SONG Materials needed: Tape recorder or piano player Music to the tune of The Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Practice singing these alternate words to the song, The Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock. (The chorus, the rains came down, is not used, just the verse.) My peace I give you, do not be afraid My peace I give you, do not be afraid My peace I give you, do not be afraid Says John 14:27 WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Practice learning it to the old familiar tune. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - WITNESS MAGNETS Materials needed: Leftover scraps of vinyl magnet (sign making companies will donate it) Stickers with religious verses or slogans Scissors Baggies Marker WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary except for gathering the supplies. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: The children are going to make magnets that they can pass out as a witness to others. (Halloween is a good time to pass these out along with whatever you normally give.) Have the children put stickers on the white side of the magnet. Cut around the magnet. Have each child keep their magnets in a baggie until you're ready for them to take them home to share. Mark each child's baggie with their name. Encourage the children to think of other missionary work they can do right at home and in their surrounding community, school and church.
