Memory Verse: "Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life." Rev. 2:10, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - COMMUNITY WORKERS MATCH-UP Materials needed: (20) 4 X 6 cards Flannel board Straight pins Pictures of the following, xeroxed and cut to fit the 4 X 6 cards (make two cards for each worker): Policeman, postman, fireman, teacher, doctor or nurse, mechanic, clerk, librarian, road crew worker and farmer WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Make two picture cards for each community worker mentioned above. Mix the cards up and pin them to the flannel board in random fashion. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children take turns turning two cards over looking for matches. When they find a match they may remove it and take it back to their seats with them. Talk about the different jobs these community workers do to help make the town a better place to live. The church needs workers too. Even way back in Bible times when the church was just beginning special workers were needed to help run the church. Let's find out about some of them. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY BINGO Materials needed: Card stock (one piece for each child measuring 8.5" long X 6" high) Ruler Marker 12 Bingo disc chips or 12 coins for each child WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) On a piece of blank white paper draw a bingo card measuring 8.5" long X 6" high. Divide the card into squares, 16 in all. In twelve of the squares draw the following simple pictures. Do not draw them in order. Draw them in random fashion all over the board. Leave the top row of 4 squares blank. 1. Church 2. Lady 3. Child 4. 7 5. Man 6. Write the word, DEACON 7. Handcuffs 8. Bible 9. Write the word, JESUS 10. Stone 11. Praying hands 12. Write the word, WORK Xerox this page onto a sheet of card stock for each child. On the top row of 4 empty squares do the following: 1. Color the first square yellow. Color the second square red. Color the third square blue. Color the fourth square green. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a Bingo card. After telling the Bible story, use the card as a review game. Say something like, "under the green row how many men were chosen as deacons? (7) Under the blue row what did they throw at Stephen? (Stone) etc. Continue making up questions and asking them until all the squares have discs or coins on them. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE PYRAMID Materials needed: Brown/gray construction paper (Enough to cut out 12 medium size rocks for each child) Bible Marker WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) On each child's rocks print the following memory verse words or draw the symbol indicated: Rock 1 - picture of a bee Rock 2 - print the word, faithful Rock 3 - print the word even Rock 4 - make a number 2 Rock 5 - Make a large dot (explain that it is a point) Rock 6 - Make a cross Rock 7 - Make the letter, "I" Rock 8 - Print the word will Rock 9 - Make a gift box (represents give) Rock 10 - Make the letter, "U" Rock 11 - Make a crown Rock 12 - Print the word life WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the verse is found in the Bible. Give each child a stack of rocks. Have them lay them out for easy viewing. The first row will have four memory verse words on it. The second row on top of those four will have three. The third row will have two. The fourth row will have two and the last row will have one stone. The first word of the verse is "be." Ask the children to find the rock with the bee on it. The second word starts with "f". Place that rock next to the bee. Continue finding the verse words and laying them in rows to create a pyramid when finished. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - DISCOVERING GOD'S WORKERS Materials needed: A church bulletin (represents church secretary or bulletin typist) A scrub brush (represents a janitor) A can of food (represents potluck servers) A Bible (represents the minister) A Sabbath school quarterly (represents the teacher) Communion tray (represents the elder) Baby outfit (represents the community services worker) Silk of artificial flowers (represents the floral arrangers) Piece of sheet music (represents anyone who contributes music) Purse with play or real money in it (represents the treasurer) Play mower (represents the deacon or deaconess) Sack or trash bag that will hold all the above items WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Place all the objects in the sack or trash bag. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children take turns drawing items from the bag and talking about what worker in the church uses the item. (Answers are given in parenthesis above) Talk about how each worker in the church is important and discuss what kinds of work Kindergarten children can do.
