******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, August 12, 2000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date: July 15, 2000 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, BROKEN PROMISES ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: Jesus will help us make and keep good promises. Memory Verse: "The righteous hate what is false." Proverbs 13:5, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - TRUE/FALSE SIGNS Materials needed: (2) 3 X 5 cards for each child (2) popsicle sticks for each child Glue sticks Markers WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Each child will make a true and a false sign. Give each child two 3 X 5 cards and a marker. On one card they print the word, TRUE. On the other card they print the word, FALSE. Have them turn the cards over and glue a popsicle stick to the back of each one. Ask them what the word, true, means. (Something that is a fact. Something you can know for sure. True also means faithful.) Ask them what the word, false, means. (Something untrue, dishonest, artificial, not real) Read the following sentences. Ask the children to hold up their true sign if they think what is happening is true. They hold up their false sign if they think what is happening is false. 1. Mommy tells you she loves you. Later that day she spanks you for being naughty. Is it true that she loves you? How do you know? 2. Your friend tells you he knows some things about cats you don't know. He doesn't even have a cat. Later he shows you the book where he found out things about cats. Is it true that your friend knows things about cats? How do you know? 3. The boy up the street says he is your best friend. Whenever you go out to play with him, though, he goes back inside. Also when you call him on the phone he can't talk. He never seems to want to hang around you. Is it true that he is your best friend? Why or why not? In our Bible story today, we learn about how God feels about truth and falsehood. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY TAPE Materials needed: Cassette recorder/cassette tape WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Tell the children that they are going to imagine that they are pieces of money. They are going to pretend that they are special pieces of money that can think and hear and talk like human beings. Narrate the Bible story as written in the quarterly inserting the following money speaking lines where indicated. Turn the recorder on at the beginning of the narration. Push the pause button when it is time for the children to speak the money's part. The parts they speak are short and there is no reading involved. Simply tell them what to say as you hold the pause button down, then release the button and have them speak their part. At the end, rewind the tape and play the story back. Begin the story as is in the quarterly. After saying, "And this love overflowed to everyone around them," insert this line for child #1: "I'm money given to help the poor." Insert this line for child #2: "I'm money given to help the homeless." Insert this line for child #3: "I'm money used for the new church." Resume the story at,"It was a wonderful sight to see people bringing their money and gifts to help others." After saying, "Two families came to Peter with money for an offering," insert this line for child #4 & #5: "I'm money that Ananias and Sapphira brought to Peter." "I'm money that Barnabas brought to Peter." Resume the story at, "Ananias and Sapphira decided to join Jesus' followers." After saying,"We want to give it all to help the poor," insert this line for child #6: "Huh,oh! Ananias and Sapphira lied. I'm the money they kept." Resume the story at, "Ananias lied to Peter." After saying,"The man who sold the land was named Joses, or Barnabas," insert this line for child #7:"I'm the money Barnabas gave Peter when he sold his land." Resume the story at, "He didn't have to do this." Continue through the rest of the lesson from the quarterly. If you have a small Sabbath school, a child can say more than one line. If you have a larger group, give other children parts of the narration to say. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE BALLOON RELAY Materials needed: A large balloon for each child Marker Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Print the memory verse on each balloon with the marker. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Stand six children in a vertical line about 2-3 feet apart. Place their six balloons at the front of the line. The child at the front of the line picks up one of the balloons, says the first word of the verse and taps it to the person behind him. That person says the second word of the verse and taps it to the person behind him. This continues until the balloon reaches the end of the line where it is again placed on the floor or in a box. The child at the front of the line can pick up the next balloon and repeat the same procedure as soon as the person behind him is ready to receive another balloon. The object of the activity is to get all the balloons to the end of the line where each child can then retrieve theirs to take home. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - PROMISE KEEPERS Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Remind the children that broken promises are like lies. We are being false when we do not do what we say we will do. We should not make promises we do not know for sure that we can keep. When we say we will do something we should make every effort possible to follow through and do it whether it is a promise or not. Have the children hold hands and stand in a circle. Place a quarter on the floor under one of the children's shoes. Have the children shut their eyes and walk around in a circle holding hands. Say the following verse as you go. Chicks are peepers Bugs are creepers Let's see who are promise keepers When you get to the end of the verse, have the children open their eyes and see who is standing on or closest to the quarter. That child is the promise keeper. Have them give an answer for one of the following questions: 1. What will a promise-keeper do when mom tells him/her to stay in their own yard? 2. What will a promise-keeper do when he/she tells dad they'll pull weeds in his garden? 3. What will a promise-keeper do when your best friend tells you a secret and asks you not to tell? (If it's not a secret that would them or anybody else.) 4. What will a promise-keeper do when the babysitter asks you to turn the TV off as soon as a certain part is over? 5. What will a promise-keeper do when they say they will help mom clean house, but then his/her friend invites him/her to go swimming? Make-up more according to your time limit and number of participants in the group.
