Memory Verse: "Have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them." Ex. 25:8, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - BUILDING SUPPLIES Materials needed: Some type of animal skin or fur (you can actually buy small pieces of felt or material that look like fur in craft sections of Wal-Mart) Square piece of white cloth Food coloring (to represent dye) Jewelry (especially gold and silver; doesn't have to be authentic, the children won't know the difference) Gems or precious stones Incense Lamp oil Tray Cloth cover for the tray WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Place all the items on the tray and cover over the tray with a cloth or towel. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Tell the children that you are going to show them a tray of items that were like those used in building the first church. They will have 2 minutes to look at them. Then the tray will be recovered and they are to verbally tell you what they remember seeing. After the activity follow up with: In our Bible story today people brought these items to Moses to be used in building the sanctuary. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE SANCTUARY Materials needed: Colored construction paper White paper (one sheet for each child) Scissors Glue Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Draw the outline of a church (side view) on a sheet of white paper. Xerox one copy for each child. Cut out the following pieces from construction paper for each child small enough to be glued onto their white church. Write the indicated memory verse words on the construction paper pieces. 1. Three yellow windows - "among them." 2. One brown door - "for me" 3. One steeple base - "and I" 4. One steeple spiral top that sits on the base - "will dwell" 5. One red roof - "a sanctuary" 6. One blue side wall - "Have them make" WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in their Bible. Give them each a church outline and the construction paper pieces and glue. As you repeat the words of the memory verse together assemble and glue the sanctuary together. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - CHURCH TOUR Materials needed: Box (about the size of a school box) Sequins, jewels, beads, feathers, shells (anything pretty to decorate the outside of the box with) Glue WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Take the children on a tour of the sanctuary. Ask them to point out things that were brought into the church to prepare it to be a place to worship God. (Lights, carpeting, pews, pulpit and chairs, piano, organ etc.) How did the things get to the church? Were they brought from families who owned them like the Israelites did? (Most likely not) Nowadays when we build churches families give money to be used to buy the items needed to build a church. Return to the classroom. Help the children decorate the outside of the school box. Call it the Building God's House Box. Encourage the children to bring special offerings for the next 4 weeks to put into the box. Then turn the money in to Sabbath School Expense or to your local church budget. Make sure the children understand that these monies will be used especially for building and improving their church. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - Materials needed: Building blocks Tape recorder and tape OR piano player Music to the tune of So Early In the Morning WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Spread the blocks out on the floor. Have the children gather in a circle around them. Teach them to sing the following words to the old song, So Early In the Morning. Build a church using the blocks.
