******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, July 14, 2001 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: June 15, 2001 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, GOD'S TEN COMMANDMENTS ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: To teach the children that because God loves us, He gives us good rules to guide us. Memory Verse: "This is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands." 2 John 6, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION-GETTING READY TO MEET WITH GOD Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare in advance) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Ask the children if they came to meet with Jesus this morning. What did they do to get ready to meet with Jesus? (Tell the children to think of things they did to get ready to come to church) Instead of answering out loud have the children show by mimes or actions their activities of preparation. (Encourage them with the following clues whispered in their ear if they get stumped.) Took a bath or shower Chose special clothes and got dressed Combed hair and brushed teeth Read from the Bible and prayed Had something to eat The children can act out the ideas individually or if your class is larger, as a group. Ask the children if they knew that Jesus would be sitting on a chair in the Kindergarten room and they would see Him waiting for them would they be more careful about getting ready? Would they want to be right on time, or would they want to keep Jesus waiting? In our Bible story today the Israelites are going to have a special meeting with God. God's presence was always with them, but this meeting was special. God was very clear when He told them how to get ready to meet Him. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY ALIVE Materials needed: Votive candle and matches Incense Play-doh Empty gallon milk jug Scissors Box of sand (large enough for gallon jug to sit in and deep enough for toothpicks to "stand around the jug" in) Toothpicks Baby food jar Tape Popsicle sticks (one for each child) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut the gallon jug in half right below the handle. Cut the narrow neck off at the top. When you sit the jug in the sand it should resemble a volcano with a hole at the top and a pyramid shape (except for the handle). Sit the jug in the sandbox. Turn the baby food jar over and place the candle on top of the jar inside of the jug. Tape the incense to the candle. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: The children are going to help you create the Bible story as a scene. Give them each Play-doh and a popsicle stick. Have them make a tent making two flat squares for sides and connecting them to the popsicle at the top. Set the tents around the camp (not in the sand close to the mountain). Light the candle and the incense. Talk about the glow of the mountain and the smoke of the incense. Talk about the special happenings that occurred when God's presence came to Mount Sinai. When you get to the part of the story that talks about the people drawing close to the mountain give each child toothpicks to insert in the sand around the base of the mountain. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE RHEBUS Materials needed: Colored card stock paper Pencil Markers (thin and broad-line) Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Make each child a ten commandments shape out of the colored card stock paper. With the pencil, write the Roman numeral numbers on the 10 commandment shapes leaving room under each number for a word or picture. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in their Bibles. Give them each a 10 commandment shape. Under Roman numeral I they print the words, THIS IS. (For younger children you may need to do the printing and let them trace over the letters with a marker.) Under Roman numeral II have them draw a heart to represent the word, LOVE. Under Roman numeral III have them print or trace the word, THAT. Under Roman numeral IV have them draw 2 stick figures to represent the word, WE. Under Roman numeral V have them draw stick figures turned sideways with one leg extended to represent the word, WALK. Under Roman numeral VI have them print or trace the word, IN. Under Roman numeral VII have them draw a stick figure and a stop sign to represent the word, OBEDIENCE. Under Roman numeral VIII have them write a number 2. Under Roman numeral IX have them print or trace the word, HIS. Under Roman numeral X have them draw a picture of a Bible to represent the word, COMMANDS. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - BIBLE BOOKMARK Materials needed: Neon glow pens Black construction paper Scissors WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut out open Bible shapes from the black construction paper, one for each child. Make them large enough to print the memory verse across. Print the memory verse in large letters with a pen across the open Bible. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give the children neon glow pens to trace over the words of the memory verse in their open Bible. Remind them that in order to obey God's commands we have to know what they are. His commands are found throughout the Bible. Even though they are not old enough to read much of the Bible, they can remind an adult living with them to read them words and tell them stories from the Bible. Encourage them to take their bookmarks home as a reminder to learn what God's commands are.
