Memory Verse: "...............'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'" Heb. 13:5, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - ORDERING EVENTS Materials needed: 3 different shades of yarn (Four 12" pieces of each shade) (12) 3 X 5 cards Permanent marker Hole puncher WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) On four of the 3 X 5 cards write the following information: 1. Take the dishes out of the cupboard 2. Lay the dishes on the table 3. Spread the tablecloth on the table 4. Sit down and eat On four more 3 X 5 cards write the following information: 1. Dry the dishes 2. Wash the dishes 3. Rinse the dishes 4. Put the dishes away On four more 3 X 5 cards write the following information: 1. Dig up soil 2. Plant some vegetable seeds 3. Water the seeds 4. Pick the vegetables Punch two holes at the top of each 3 X 5 card. Tie a strand of yarn on each 3 X 5 card so it can be worn around the neck. Keep the cards that match all one color of yarn. Mix up the cards and place them in a basket or box. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children choose a card from the basket or box and put it around their neck. Then have them get together in groups according to the color of yarn they are wearing. (If your group is small, have them all choose the same color each time around.) Read each card in one particular group. Have the children decide what comes first, second, third and fourth and stand in that order. Continue in this manner for each group. Explain to the children that when events happen in a certain order it is called chronology. One thing has to happen before another one does. The events in our Bible stories over the past several weeks have happened in a certain order. In our Bible story today Jesus tries to explain how all the events that happened to Him happened in a certain order. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY MAZE Materials needed: Pictures of the following: (Use the memory verse pictures from the Kindergarten quarterly if available.) Xerox a copy of each picture for each child. Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus on trial Judas betraying Jesus Jesus crucified Jesus' resurrection Jesus walking to Emmaus 3 X 5 cards Popsicle sticks(optional) Tape (optional) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut the pictures the same size and make a set of six pictures for each child. On six 3 X 5 cards print one number, 1 - 6. Tape it to a popsicle stick. Stick the popsicle sticks in different locations outside in the ground. Make them far enough apart that the children have to hunt around for them. (If you have to stay inside due to inclement weather or location, place them in hiding around the room) WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children journey together with you through Jesus' life. Look for each "mile marker" or 3 X 5 post. When you get to the correct one each child leaves the picture that tells what happened next. (For example: At "mile marker" one each child should choose to leave the praying Jesus. At "mile marker" two each child should choose to leave the Jesus on trial picture.) Continue in this manner until you complete the journey. Then collect all the pictures and give each child a set back. Staple them together and have them take them home as a reminder booklet. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - Materials needed: Yarn Small adhesive labels Pen Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Take the yarn and twist and turn it crazily all around the room all over the floor. (The object is for the children to follow the maze to get to each word of the memory verse) Write a memory verse word on each label. Stick the labels on the yarn periodically so as the children follow the maze they will discover them along the way. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give the children turns following the maze to discover the ten words of the memory verse. When one child has found a word, they stop and another child picks up where they left off and continues the maze looking for the next word. The labels can be removed as they are found. When the maze is completed and all the words are found return to your seats and show the children where the verse is found in the Bible. No matter how many changes happen to us, no matter how hard things look (like a maze) Jesus will always be with us. He will never leave us. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - ROLL THE DICE QUESTION Materials needed: A dice WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children sit in a circle. Each rolls the dice once. Whoever has the highest number is the first to tell the rest of the group a question they would like to ask Jesus when they walk and talk with Him in Heaven. If some children roll the same number, they roll between themselves again. After a child has told what question they would ask, they don't roll the dice again until the next round. This way each child will eventually get to tell what question they would ask.
