******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, March 24, 2001 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: January 31, 2001 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, A SAD DAY FOR GOD ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: God is patient with us and forgives us. Memory Verse: "The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous." 1 Peter 3:12, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION -FIRE ESCAPE RELAY Materials needed: Small step ladder or bunk bed ladder Small fire extinguisher (like kept in a kitchen; if you don't have one buy a can of Silly string) Hour glass sand timer Play or real telephone WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Position the step or bunk ladder against a wall in a corner of the room. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Ask the children if their family has ever made a fire escape plan? Have they ever been taught what to do if they thought there was a fire in their house? 1. Display the fire extinguisher or a smoke detector. (If unavailable at least show a picture) The first thing to do is make sure you have smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in your home. Ask your parents if you have these. Place the extinguisher in a corner of the room. If it is a small fire it can be put out with an extinguisher. But what if it is bigger? 2. Always crawl along the floor to the nearest door. (Show the children how to crawl to the door) 3. Put your hand up and feel along the door to see how warm it is. (Show children how to feel the door) 4. If it is cool you can crack the door to see what's going on, on the other side. If it is the slightest bit warm, you may have to use a rope ladder to climb out the window. A rope ladder is different from a step ladder. It hangs out a window and drapes over the side of the wall. (Climb the step ladder and come back down) 5. As soon as you can get to a telephone call the fire department. (Pretend to use the telephone) Now play a relay game with the children. Have them line up in a vertical line. Turn the sand timer over. The first child in line runs over to the fire extinguisher, carries it back to the line of children then back to the corner and leaves it. They then crawl along the floor to the door and feel along the door. They then run to the ladder and climb up and down. The final stop is the telephone where they practice dialing 911 and answering a question from the "operator." (NOTE: It is important, even in role plays like this one, to teach children NOT TO HANG UP until the operator has all the information needed.) As soon as they are back to the line the second child goes. The goal is for all the children to complete the fire drill relay before the timer runs out. In our story today there is a big fire in the city of Sodom. There is a fire escape plan. Angels go to the city to help with the fire escape plan. Let's see what happens. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY POP-UP BOOK Materials needed: 2 pieces of heavy card stock paper for each child Construction paper Scotch Tape Scissors Several 3 X 5 cards WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Fold the 2 pieces of card stock paper in half and then in half a gain. Staple along the left-hand side to form a book. On the front cover of the book print in pencils the title, A Sad Day. Make the following three basic shapes for each child from construction paper; an angel, a fire a house (The basic outline forms can be traced from coloring books or felt shapes.) Cut the shapes out. Cut the 3 X 5 cards into strips. Each child will need 3 strips. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a book. Have them trace over the title with markers. Give each child a 3 X 5 strip. Show them how to fold it back and forth in an accordion fashion. Tape one end to the inside of the first page on the right-hand side and the other end to the house shape. Give each child a second 3 X 5 card strip to make another pop-up tab. Tape one end of this tab to the inside of the second page on the right-hand side and the other end to the angel shape. Follow this same procedure for the fire shape on the third page. Close the book carefully so the shapes lay down flat. Then when the page is opened they should spring up. Encourage the children to share the storybook and tell the story to their friends and family using the shapes as reminders of what happened. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - 20/20 VISION Materials needed: Pair of eyeglasses Binoculars Magnifying glass Telescope (make a pretend one out of a paper towel tube if necessary) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Pick up each of the following items and say the words of the verse that go with each item. 1. Eyeglasses - The eyes 2. Binoculars - of the Lord 3. Magnifying glass - are on 4. Telescope - the righteous All of these devices help us see more clearly. They help us see details we might otherwise miss. Jesus' eyes are on us all the time. He does not need any help seeing us and what is happening to us. He looks for every way that He can to draw us closer to Him. Have the children practice picking up the items and repeating the verse words that go with them. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - HELPING HANDS Materials needed: (1) sheet of blank white paper for each child Pencil Scissors Piano player or cassette recorder and tape Music to the tune of Home on the Range WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Learn the music. Practice singing it to the tune of Home on the Range (verse part). If I take your hand and you hold onto mine We will help one another each day As we travel along to our heavenly home our Jesus will show us the way WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children lay one of their hands down on the paper. Trace around it and cut it out. Have the children connect their paper hands to one another and sing the song together. Remind them of how the angels took Lot's hand and led he and his family to safety. We can hold hands and help each other every day.
